How many touch points does your multi-touch touch screen support?  DisplayLite lead the way with the first ‘touch point indicator’ system.

If you are considering purchasing a multi-touch touch screen then this is the question you should be asking your supplier. Most touch screen manufacturers are promoting products that support two or more simultaneous touch points as “multi-touch” but then don’t make it clear how many simultaneous touch points their products support.

To find this out, you have to search hard through the specifications and if you’re lucky you might just find it.  DisplayLite are the first in the industry to introduce a logo that clearly indentifies how many fingers (touch points) their multi-touch products are capable of supporting.

So why does it matter? Well if your application requires one user using 2 finger gestures like zoom, rotate, pinch then a touch screen that supports 2 simultaneous touch points will do.

However, if your application is multi-user, multi-touch, then you need a touch screen that supports more than two simultaneous touch points. For example, to support 16 users (performing 2 finger gestures) you would need a touch screen that supports 32 simultaneous touch points or fingers.

With their experience in this industry sector DisplayLite saw a need to eliminate this confusion and created this simple but effective system. Director, Steve Legg explains, “The logo will be used on our data sheets and user manuals to easily identify how many touch points our touch screens support. As far as we know we are the first touch screen supplier in the UK to provide this information”.

Clearly as software developers exploit the full potential of multi-touch, multi-user applications, in education, digital signage, professional gaming and command and control applications, it will be a requirement to know how many simultaneous touch points are supported by the touch screen.
